Cocker Spaniels make up the Sporting group of dogs according to the AKC. In fact, they belong to the Hound dog group and are still being used in such activities as hunting, tracking, and field trials. To be able to perform their functions, Cocker Spaniels were bred with emphasis on physical mobility, a great extent of agility, strength, and good mental powers.
Cocker Spaniels are good in flushing and retrieving small game. Their small size, 24-28 pounds to 28-34 pounds in American and English Cockers respectively, allows them to reach places with dense bushes that are usually inaccessible to larger breeds.
It is for the sake of the Cocker's ability to perform its original functions did owners decided to crop its tail. The dog used to wound it severely in harsh brush. Nowadays, the Cocker's tail is docked to about 2/5 of its length. Cocker Spaniels always carry their tail horizontally. It is always in motion indicating a dog's mood and a high extent of curiosity, which is so characteristic of the breed.
Wonderful retrievers, Cockers have a strong neck that tapers to the head. Powerful jaws are also meant for a good grip. The Cocker's muzzle is broad, with well-developed nostrils, which allows for an easy breath. The color of the nose is black. It can also be of various shades of brown or liver depending on the coat color.
Cockers come in a variety of colors. The most common coat colors are black, liver, cream, or red. Solid-colored Cockers are allowed to have some white on the chest. White markings on the feet are undesirable. Parti-colors should have evenly distributed markings throughout the body.
The length of the coat should be controlled by the means of trimming every 6 to 8 weeks. Cockers have a medium-sized coat that is longer on the chest, abdomen, and legs. Its silky fine texture gives one a pleasant sensation of warmth.

Cocker Spaniels - Puppies - Personality
Cockers are very agile and inquisitive. This quality, common to all hunting breeds, allows Cockers to excel in numerous canine sports and make wonderful pets. Cocker Spaniels are recommended for families and older people. To meet their need for exercise, both physical and mental, one has to spend enough time with them indoors and outdoors, keeping in mind that Cockers are rather people-oriented dogs. Cocker Spaniels - Puppies - Health Concerns
The breed is prone to eye and ear problems, cataracts and deafness being the most severe among them. Canine Hip Dysplasia is also inherent in the breed. However, there is a growing tendency to lessen the level of CHD occurrence in the last 15 years. Allergies, liver disease and some other disorders are minor concerns in Cocker Spaniels.
